Ed and I had a serious and sombre talk at breakfast the next day, and we both now agreed that our old friend was gone forever, and we needed to move forward and start looking for a new housemate. Meanwhile, I noticed that Ed was still rubbing that darn coin between his fingers, but I decided to ignore it.
A few days later, I got an unexpected opportunity to do a temporary work experience placement in another city, so I quickly bid farewell to Ed and said we would start looking for a new housemate as soon as I got back.
I had a great time at the placement and met some really interesting nerdy folks who I enjoyed talking with in length about computers. However, I made sure that I continued to message Ed regularly as I was worried he might start to feel lonely in that house on his own. Then, about half way through the placement, I suddenly stopped receiving replies from him. I kept trying, and some even showed up as read, but no replies ever came.
By the time I arrived back at the house a few weeks later, I was feeling quite anxious about what I would find when I got there. However, what I found was an empty house. All of Ed’s belongings had gone from his room, and the only thing I found was a badly written note on the kitchen table. It looked like Ed’s handwriting, except messier and rushed, not his usual neat and careful style at all.
The note said, “Living with Tim and the guys now. Bye nerd!”
With a PS, “Touch the coin, and maybe you’ll join us one day.”
Beneath the note, Ed had left the Apollo coin, which glinted at me with a strange and attractively otherworldly quality that I couldn’t even describe. I saw my hand reaching towards it, but then I quickly pulled myself back.
I started to shake again. What had happened? Had Ed become like Tim now? Was it all because of that blasted coin? To be on the safe side, I wrapped the coin up in a dishcloth without touching it, and then stuffed it into a drawer. Then I started to cry.
The house was a very quiet and lonely place now without Tim and Ed. I wasn’t going to be able to pay the rent on my own, so I would have to find new housemates or move out. I felt very hurt and let down by my former friends’ apparent betrayal, and didn’t even make an effort to try and find Ed. I hoped he and Tim were happy living with their stupid new jock friends.
However, it turned out Ed was still on my course. When I arrived at the next lecture, I quickly spotted him sitting at the far end of the room, surrounded by some giggling girls who seemed to be very enamoured with him. He also quickly noticed me as I walked into the room. As our eyes met, he gave me that same smug smile that Tim had given me, before rolling up his sleeve and confidently flexing an unbelievably huge bicep in my direction.
